Jean Varda
Jean Varda, Anais Nin,
and Henry Miller
Jean Varda, Janko to his friends, was a flamboyant Greek artist who lived on a huge boat “The Vallejo” moored in Sausalito. I believe he was there in the late 50’s- early 70’s. Many well known poets writers & artists gathered on the boat to share a meal, drink & exchange ideas. Varda would come down the coast to our home in Big Sur to visit my Dad. Some of their mutual friends were Allen Ginsberg, Anais Nin, Benjamino Bufano and various musicians and fellow artists & writers. Around 1968-9 Varda came to our home in Pacific Palisades with his wonderful collages. I don’t recall whether he had been exhibiting them in a gallery or show? Dad bought about 6-8 of the collages & several of them were hung at the house. He gave some away, I received one titled “Mysteries of Eleusis” which I treasure.
